To bolster his argument, Giuliani noted that his second "period no space" error ("Helsinki.Either") didn't generate a link.

Last week, Giuliani took to his Twitter account to decry special prosecutor Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election.

Velazquez didn't know it at the time, but this was just the beginning of what would become a viral social media prank that resulted in Giuliani's typo being used to send an anti-Trump message: "Donald J. Trump is a traitor to our country".

"Twitter allowed someone to invade my text with a disgusting anti-President message", Giuliani tweeted, adding that the "same thing-period no space-occurred later and it didn't happen".

It's one thing to question Twitter's practice of banning users for breaking their terms of service, like many on the right have done, but it's an entirely different matter to claim that Twitter is anti-Trump because your own carelessness caused you to literally type in a URL, which Twitter rightfully turned into a link. Thanks to the fact that '.in" is the top-level domain name for India, the construction "G-20.In' formed a nonsensical but entirely web address. It's similar in the United Kingdom in the United States.

Velazquez told NBC News that he had simply seen Giuliani's inadvertent hyperlink as an opportunity to "do something funny" and that he has no contacts at Twitter who could have helped him to "invade" the attorney's tweet-which Twitter confirmed would be impossible even if Velazquez had been so inclined.

At most, Velazquez thought his stunt would get a "few hundred retweets" and then be absorbed into the Twittersphere, but by early Wednesday morning, Giuliani's tweet containing the link had about 45,000 likes and almost 17,000 retweets. But he tried to post a tweet with.rudygiuliani, for instance, it wouldn't create a link. In 2017, he said that he would serve as Trump's cybersecurity czar.
