"Nasa will be conducting a cultural assessment study in coordination with our commercial partners to ensure the companies are meeting Nasa's requirements for workplace safety, including the adherence to a drug-free environment", the agency had noted in a statement.

NASA has named nine United States companies, including Lockheed Martin Corp, that will compete for funding under the space agency's renewed long-term moon programme, a private-public undertaking to develop technology that will explore the lunar surface.

NASA will re-examine the private market periodically for new and emerging lunar delivery capabilities, and may offer additional companies an opportunity to join Commercial Lunar Payload Services through a contract process called on-ramping.

This space program is a private-public undertaking to develop a technology which will explore the lunar eclipse.

The approach will allow NASA to cut costs, Bridenstine said.

Lunar payloads could fly on these contracted missions as early as 2019.

NASAs Science Mission Directorate (SMD) initiated the request for proposals leading to these selections as the first step in achieving a variety of science and technology objectives that could be addressed by regularly sending instruments, experiments and other small payloads to the Moon.
