As Election Day unfolded, Democrats were increasingly confident, predicting a House majority on the strength of voter enthusiasm, robust fundraising and unusually fresh candidates.

But Tuesday's results were a bitter outcome for Trump after a campaign that became a referendum on his leadership.

The Trump administration now holds power in all branches of government - the presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court - and if Democrats were to take back the House, they could put a pin in much of Trump's agenda. The party has pledged to check the president's power and start a slew of investigations on matters including his tax returns, Russian involvement in the 2016 election and actions by his administration.

Trump's Republican coalition is increasingly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree. This is someone the president went in and closed the deal for last night. Moscow denies meddling and Trump denies any collusion.

Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler has said he wants to investigate President Trump and Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

"Tonight, President Trump called Leader Mitch McConnell to congratulate him on the historic senate gains", Sanders told the White House Press Pool.

But Democrats have been fired up by anger at Trump's extraordinary attacks over the last few weeks against immigrants, claiming that his opponents seek to throw open the borders to "drug dealers, predators and bloodthirsty MS-13 killers". When the Cook Report classified Menendez's race as a toss-up recently, things got tense for Democrats over a race that under normal circumstances they would have won going away.

Oprah campaigns for Stacey Abrams in Georgia
"I'd like to remind Stacey and Oprah and Will Ferrell , I'm kind of a big deal too", said Pence. The Abrams campaign called the ads "poisonous", but said they weren't buying Kemp's response.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas.

Striking a dark tone at a rally in IN on Monday evening, Trump accused Democrats of "openly encouraging millions of illegal aliens to break our laws, violate our borders and overrun our country". More women than ever were running, along with veterans and minorities, many of them motivated by President Trump's rise.

While political pundits may ultimately analyze Tuesday's results as a test of Trump, many Americans will undoubtedly base their vote on factors other than their feelings about the president: economic indicators, health care, tax reform, immigration or just their overall comfort level with the direction the country is headed.

But Trump is such an unusual politician who has made a career overturning conventions and expectations that it's possible he will defy ominous precedents.

Jennifer Wexton, a Democratic state lawmaker, was ahead of two-term Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock by 57 percent to 43 percent in their suburban northern Virginia district that Hillary Clinton won in 2016, NBC reported.

Mr Trump's party is projected to hold on to the upper chamber in Congress, where they now hold a slim 51-49 majority.

In Indiana, Trump-backed businessman Mike Braun defeated Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly.

Khashoggi’s body was ‘dissolved’ after murder - Erdogan advisor
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have made a decision to cancel most of its $5 million charity to Saudi following Jamal Khashoggi's murder.

Some of the campaign's biggest Democratic stars lost.

Rep. Tim Ryan of OH, who challenged Pelosi unsuccessfully in 2016, has left the door open to the possibility of challenging the Democratic leader again, while others are mulling a bid only if Pelosi steps aside or if she were to be defeated in a run for speaker.

Republicans have picked up three seats in the Senate so far, defeating Democratic incumbents in Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota.

Meanwhile, several 2020 presidential prospects easily won re-election, including Sens. Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown held his seat in Ohio.

Americans are voting for all 435 seats in the House and 35 out of 100 seats in the Senate, a as well as state governors.

The result upends the balance of power in Washington, where Trump has enjoyed an easy ride from Republican dominance of both houses of Congress since his shock election in 2016. The fact is they do not believe it, they just use it as a way to try to overturn the elections.
