Shooting reported at California bar

The shooting at the Western-style bar left 12 people dead, and authorities said they believe the gunman, US Marines veteran Ian David Long, 28, took his life and was dead when officers finally made entry into the bar.

"Borderline was our safe space", Brendan Kelly, who survived both the Las Vegas and Thousand Oak shootings, told KABC.

On Wednesday evening, there were at least 100 people inside the Borderline bar - which describes itself as Ventura County's largest country dance hall and live music venue. Brendan Kelly survived a mass shooting by falling back on his Marine Corps training to get to safety - and help others in need. He said he had friends who hadn't been accounted for. It was not immediately known whether the suspect was killed in a shootout with police or by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities say multiple people were injured in the shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, which is about 40 miles west of Los Angeles.

"It's a horrific scene in there", Dean said in the parking lot.

They include Sheriff's Sergeant Ron Helus, who was first on the scene, Cody Coffman, 22, Alaina Housley, 18, Justin Meeks, 23, Noel Sparks and Dan Manrique.

Trump BLOWS UP at Jim Acosta: 'You are a rude, bad person'
Acosta then stood up again to try and ask another question, prompting Trump to order him to "just sit down, please". One recent survey from Rasmussen, a generally Trump-friendly poll, found that approval number at 36 per cent.

Police said he appeared to have shot himself after opening fire on the bar's patrons.

Dean held back tears as he commemorated Helus, who he said planned on retiring in the coming year.

"I got concerned, so I called the sheriffs", neighbor Tom Hanson said outside his home Thursday as federal and local law enforcement officers searched Long's house.

Authorities haven't determined a motive.

Investigations into the latest shooting are ongoing.

FBI investigators following leads in quest to investigate the gunman's state of mind. "We certainly will look at that option".

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said his department had several previous contacts with Long, including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him angry and acting irrationally. He was described to be a bearded man wearing a black jacket, hat, and glasses.

TV footage showed SWAT teams surrounding the bar, with distraught revelers milling around and using their cell phones as lights from police cars flashed. He shot the front doorman, who was just a young man.

California already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, but on Thursday, governor-elect Gavin Newsom promised he "will raise the bar" on gun control when he takes over in January.

President Donald Trump tweeted that he had "been fully briefed on the bad shooting", the latest chapter in America's epidemic of gun violence that came just 10 days after a gunman killed 11 worshippers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. "We just learned that our niece Alaina was one of the victims of last night's shooting at Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks".

People comfort each other as they sit near the scene, November 8, 2018, in Thousand Oaks, Calif. where a gunman opened fire Wednesday inside a country dance bar crowded with hundreds of people on "college night".
