The 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer has made a flourishing progress in the French capital.

In an intense three-set encounter, the 2018 Wimbledon and US Open Champion, Djokovic won with a scoreline of 7-6 (6), 5-7 and 7-6 (3).

Djokovic saved a set point at 5-6 in the tie break before celebrating with gusto when a stray Federer backhand gifted him the opener.

The 22-year-old Khachanov needed one hour and 37 minutes on Sunday evening to defeat Djokovic for the first time, preventing the Serbian from equalling the record Spaniard Rafael Nadal set - 33 Masters titles.

"Karen played really well and he deserved to win that match", said Djokovic, admitting he had struggled to fully recover after overcoming Roger Federer in Saturday's pulsating semi-final. In the 2013 semifinals, he bounced back from a set down to beat the Swiss, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. He deserves it. He's a young player... up-and-coming. "Maybe I'm not crying, but still I'm really happy", he told reporters later.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead through James Milner in the 61st minute but the Gunners hit back through Alexandre Lacazette . Arsenal manager Wenger described Ramsey as " a player with a fantastic engine, good build, good technique and good vision ".

"Next to the match I played against (Rafa) Nadal in the Wimbledon semis, this was definitely the most exciting match I've played this year, and probably the best quality match that I was part of".

He then made the most of a third break point in the third game of the second set with a running forehand victor, before holding his nerve to serve out the match.

"When you lose a close match like this you always have regrets", he said. Federer is two wins shy of his 100th career title.

"Hasn't happened too many times that I don't break a serve of anyone, especially if I have 12 break points", Djokovic said.

Federer had 17 aces, while Djokovic got five of his eight in his last three service games of the match, stepping up his level at the right time.

Khachanov is the first Russian to win an ATP 1000 Masters tournament after Nikolay Davydenko who won in 2009.

The Russian, who had prevailed in just three of his 19 encounters against players in the top 10, became the third different victor of a 1000 series event this season, could still take part in the ATP Tour Finals in London as a second alternate.

"So I was fully prepared, I've been playing some good tennis in the last couple of months and believing in myself so I didn't expect to be that easy in the score". But already an established player, a top player.

"I'm sure we'll see a lot of great games from him in the future", conceded Djokovic.
