3 Girl Scouts, 1 Woman Killed in Wisconsin Hit-and-Run

Three girls and a woman were killed Saturday morning when a truck driven by a Wisconsin man struck them as their Girl Scout troop was picking up trash along a roadway.

As a western Wisconsin community grieves the deaths of three Girl Scouts and a parent who were struck by a pickup truck, authorities still haven't released the names of the victims or a fourth girl who survived.

The driver, identified as Colton Treu, 21, of Chippewa Falls, fled the scene but later turned himself in, police said. He is being held on 13 possible charges: four counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, four counts of hit-and-run involving death and one count hit-and-run involving great bodily harm. At the time of the crash, all members of the group were in the ditch on the west side of County Road P just south of the Highway 29 overpass bridge.

But at about 11:40AM, police told the Star Tribune, a black Ford F-150 pickup careened off-road and slammed into the group of girls.

Four scouts and one volunteer were killed in the crash. The two-ton pickup slammed into the Scouts, visiting tragedy on the town of 14,000 before speeding off.

Chinese Bus Plunged Into River After Passenger Assaulted Driver
A fight between the bus driver and a passenger was to blame for the crash in Chongqing's Wanzhou District, police said on Friday. Xinhua News Agency reported a floating crane pulled the wreck out of the river Wednesday night.

A fourth girl struck by the pickup was in critical condition Saturday evening. The other was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The driver fled the scene after the crash Saturday, and officials issued a call for help in locating the suspect vehicle.

After turning himself in to police, Treu admitted to police that he and the passenger in his vehicle had intentionally inhaled chemicals, which is commonly referred to as "huffing", just prior to the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.
