Haley is the latest in a string of high-profile firings and resignations from the Trump administration

Britain's ambassador to the United Nations, Karen Pierce, told AFP she was "very disappointed" by Haley's resignation, which she said learned through media reports.

Trump said Haley first discussed leaving with him six months ago. Menendez said he is concerned about the leadership vacuum she leaves and "the national security impact of her departure at this time of continued disarray for this administration".

At the UN, Haley pushed member states to enforce USA sanctions on Iran as part of President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and also criticized its missile program and support for armed groups in the Middle East.

Haley said that the post had been an honor of a lifetime, but felt like she needed to step aside after serving six years as the governor of SC and nearly two years as the United Nations ambassador. Mr Trump subsequently tweeted that "the people of SC are embarrassed by Nikki Haley".

Before departing the White House for Iowa, the president characterized his daughter as "dynamite" and competent for the job, but expressed concern that he would be accused of nepotism for naming a family member to the cabinet-level post.

Several polls show that Republican enthusiasm about voting, which had lagged behind, jumped after the Kavanaugh hearing last week. Hours later, Kavanaugh, his family by his side, was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy.

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham tweets he expects Haley will continue to be a "key player" in their party.

Nikki Haley resigned today as the USA ambassador to the United Nations, in the latest departure from President Donald Trump's national security team.

It came as a surprise that Trump nominated Haley to be his ambassador to the United Nations weeks after the 2016 election.

Ms Haley is one of the administration's most popular figures, among Republicans and Democrats, and Mr Trump praised her as a "fantastic person" who has "done an incredible job".

She will leave the administration "at the end of they year".

She gave no reason for the move or what her next step would be except to say she did not plan to run in 2020 and would campaign for Trump's reelection.

Haley is the former governor of SC.

"We do not know who she was or what she was about, but she was a serious problem at the United Nations with her uninformed statements & her causing the isolation of US", Alireza Miryousefi, the mission's press secretary, wrote on his Twitter account.

Trump and Haley went out of their way at the Oval Office meeting to emphasize that the resignation was taking place on amicable terms - something far from always the case in the turbulent first two years of the administration. It isn't yet clear why Haley resigned. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak on the record ahead of Trump's announcement.

Haley has been the face of Trump's "America First" policy at the United Nations, steering the USA withdrawal from several UN programs and ardently defending his hard-line policies against Iran and North Korea over their nuclear programs.

Before she was named by Trump to her United Nations post, Haley was governor of SC, the first woman to hold the post. She was re-elected in 2014 and remained in the position until taking up the United Nations role.
