Democratic senator suggests FBI uncovered evidence Brett Kavanaugh lied under oath as final vote looms

His confirmation provides a defining accomplishment for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, which found a unifying force in the cause of putting a new conservative majority on the court.

The vote marks the end of the most fraught successful confirmation process at least since the 1991 appointment of Clarence Thomas, another conservative judge, who was also almost derailed by claims of personal misconduct.

The Senate is expected to cast a final vote for Kavanaugh as early as Saturday. Like so many Americans, I'm deeply disappointed in Senator Collins' vote for Kavanagh.

The outcome, telegraphed Friday when the final undeclared senators revealed their views, was devoid of the shocks that had come nearly daily since Christine Blasey Ford said last month that an inebriated Kavanaugh tried to rape her at a 1982 high school get-together. The vote comes after Kavanaugh faced accusations of sexual misconduct from Ramirez and other women.

In an essay published Thursday by The Wall Street Journal, Kavanaugh said he regretted parts of his opening statement and testimony, saying they reflected his frustration.

She said in a statement released by her lawyers that the Federal Bureau of Investigation refused to speak to witnesses who could corroborate her story and added that senators are "deliberately ignoring" Kavanaugh's behavior. Accusations from several women remain under scrutiny, and House Democrats have pledged further investigation if they win the majority in November.

Big Match Focus: Liverpool v Manchester City
If Liverpool need to restore any confidence, they need only look back at their last three games against City -all wins. Manchester City is always tough, even when we won 3-0 in the Champion League . "I don't know what's going to happen".

Murkowski acknowledged she agonized over her vote, telling reporters she didn't make up her mind until she walked into the Senate chamber.

"All you have to do is look at the polls over the last three or four days and it shows that their rage-fueled resistance is starting to backfire at a level that no one has ever seen before", he said.

A key procedural vote Friday morning passes with a simple majority and that starts the clock for a final confirmation vote on judge Brett Kavanaugh to happen by Saturday afternoon, October 6 at around 5 p.m.

Vice President Mike Pence planned to be available Saturday in case his tie-breaking vote was needed.

Susan Collins of ME and Jeff Flake of Arizona voted yes, as did Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Laquan McDonald: Verdict reached in Chicago police shooting
Officials in Chicago had braced for potential unrest after the verdict, especially if jurors found Van Dyke not guilty. It's the first time in half a century that a Chicago police officer has been convicted of murder for an on-duty death.

"I think based on judicial philosophy...his failure to say he will recuse himself from issues involving the president who appointed him, the incredible lack of documentation based upon his record, and his demeanor last week disqualifies him". More than 300 have been arrested in anti-Kavanaugh protests this week in the nation's capital.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called Kavanaugh's confirmation "a low moment for the Senate, the court, and the country" and said of Kavanaugh, "He doesn't belong on the nation's highest bench".

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, voted against moving forward and said she will not support Kavanaugh in the final vote. That was the day's first GOP victory in the spellbinding battle that's been fought against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and stalwart conservative support for Trump.

Collins, Flake, Murkowski and Manchin were the only lawmakers who didn't reveal until Friday how they would vote on moving the nomination ahead.

"It's a lot of work - maybe they don't want to do it", said Grassley. Two other women also emerged and accused him of other incidents of sexual misconduct.

Teenager Shaw's debut ton puts India on top
Only Sachin Tendulkar and Parthiv Patel were younger than Shaw when they got their maiden Test half-centuries, but not on debut. Roach will be absent as he has flown back to attend a family issue and the lack of top-quality spinners is a cause for concern.
