Brazil's Workers' Party (PT) became the top political party in the lower house of the country's Congress, taking 57 seats out of the body's 513, while the far-right Social Liberal Party (PSL) of Jair Bolsonaro made a strong showing, coming in second with 51 seats.

With 68 percent of voters counted, Bolsonaro had received 46 percent of valid votes, far ahead of Haddad's 25 percent. Mr. Bolsonaro used the rest of the interview to reiterate his disdain for gay rights, dismiss the suggestion that he was a misogynist (he once called a congressional colleague "too ugly to rape") and pledge to demolish his adversary in the October 28 runoff vote, Workers' Party candidate Fernando Haddad.

A combination of file photos shows presidential candidates Jair Bolsonaro (L) attending a television debate at the Rede TV studio in Osasco, Brazil August 17, 2018 and Fernando Haddad attending a televised debate in Sao Paulo, Brazil September 26, 2018.

Supporters of presidential front-runner Jair Bolsonaro celebrate Sunday's election numbers. "We have to believe in our Brazil". Bolsonaro has said he would rather have a dead son than a gay one and told a fellow lawmaker in Congress that she was "too ugly" to be raped.

Brazilians will vote on Sunday in a polarised presidential race that could result in the election of a far-right former Army captain, whose praise of past dictatorships enrages critics but whose promise of a brutal crackdown on crime and corruption has electrified his supporters.

Premier League stats: Manchester City could improve on last season, says Gracenote
Heading into the worldwide break, City, Liverpool and Chelsea are all on 20 points, with Arsenal and Tottenham two adrift. You see teams like Arsenal, with a new manager, putting great results together.

In the past, Bolsonaro pushed for legislation that would require the machines to print voting receipts - an idea endorsed by experts who say voting machines not connected to the internet can still be hacked.

Mr Bolsonaro's win was predicted in the polls but the extent of his victory came as a surprise.

147 million people were eligible to vote.

The two men do share some similarities, including their disdain for political correctness and lack of a filter. In the forthcoming run-off election, the north-east will doubtless vote for Haddad and the Worker's Party - the party of former president Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva, himself from the region.

While some have equated Bolsonaro to Donald Trump or Silvi Berlusconi, the lingering spectre of Brazil's military dictatorship of 1964 to 1985 makes his potential election even more ominous. As the map here shows, there is only one state outside the north-east - Pará - where the majority of votes did not go to Bolsonaro. And now it has failed to nominate a candidate who could appeal to conservative voters.

Conor McGregor's UFC 229 Afterparty Canceled Due To 'Credible Threats'
McGregor also said that "the war goes on" as he seemingly ramps up his campaign to book a rematch bout with Nurmagomedov. It does remain a mystery, however, whether Nurmagomedov will receive the money he was promised from the fight.

Congressman Onyx Lorenzoni said he was making good on Bolsonaro's campaign pledge to end a system of horse-trading between party leaders in Brazilian politics, blamed for endemic corruption as past leaders wielded vast patronage in exchange for legislative support.

But a Haddad voter, Jose Dias, said it would be a "catastrophe" if Bolsonaro triumphed.

Bolsonaro is riding a wave of anger at the establishment over one of the world's largest political graft schemes and rising crime in the country with the most murders in the world.

Meanwhile, a poster that said that voting for Bolsonaro would put north-easterners "in their place", also circulated online, with some suspecting it was an intentional campaign to arouse the north-east's anti-Bolsonaro sentiments.

Laquan McDonald: Verdict reached in Chicago police shooting
Officials in Chicago had braced for potential unrest after the verdict, especially if jurors found Van Dyke not guilty. It's the first time in half a century that a Chicago police officer has been convicted of murder for an on-duty death.
