Everest draw turfed amid security concerns

The Chaser project new ad onto Opera House as Jones apologises for Louise Herron interview

The decision to conduct the draw in private on Tuesday morning, hours earlier than expected, was made by the thoroughbred racing industry body to "circumvent any security risks".

Overnight the comedy group shared footage of some members driving around Sydney in a auto with a projector attached, projecting the words "Advertise Here: Call Alan" onto the NSW Art Gallery, Parliament House and the Opera House.

The protesters gathered on the stairs and along the boardwalk around 7.30pm, chanting "shame on you" as they used torches and mobile phone lights to disrupt the 6-minute projection of the Everest horse race contenders.

With most bureaucratic controversies happening behind closed doors, it's not often the public rallies around a public servant, but an online petition in support of Sydney Opera House CEO Louise Herron has passed a quarter of a million signatures.

His disappearance was disclosed by French officials on Friday but China had remained tight-lipped about his status until now. China on Sunday confirmed that it was holding Interpol chief Meng Hongwei for investigation into possible criminal activity.

Jones had called for Ms Herron to be sacked during a testy confrontation on Friday after she ruled out allowing words or branding highlighting The Everest race to be projected onto the Opera House because "it's not a billboard".

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian overruled Herron, approving use of the Opera House for a promotion for the Everest horse race.

Since the NSW Government directed the Opera House to allow the promotional material on racing to be projected, the backlash over the decision has reached a boiling point.

The Facebook post also had images of the Sydney Opera house superimposed with text and images touting Melbourne's superiority over the harbour city.

Almost 3000 people are also expected to attend a protest at that time to disrupt the Everest projection with torches and mobile phone lights.

"The Wallabies or Vivid, they aren't advertising gambling, which is detrimental to so many families", Mr Richardson said.

More than 300,000 people have signed a petition protesting the promotion, while the NSW National Trust has questioned whether the move was legal.

"Unless for a specific artistic objective in relation to Sydney Opera House, text or slogans will not be permitted", the policy reads.

The last part of the new trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada was finalized September 31. However, the deal still needs to be ratified in Congress, which President Trump noted could be a challenge.

In the letter, Heritage Council chair Stephen Davies said the decision goes against existing management policy and may impact the UNESCO expectation for World Heritage sites.
