Although the full extent of the damage is not yet clear, one thing is certain: Hurricane Michael has been confirmed as the third-most powerful hurricane on record to hit the continental United States. Michael flattened homes, plunged communities into darkness and ravaged whole neighborhoods.

Authorities did not discuss the circumstances of their deaths, but their bodies have been taken to the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death.

He also warned carers at north Florida hospitals and nursing homes to do all possible to assure the safety of the elderly and infirm.

Bay County officials have previously said 56 people chose to stay back in Mexico Beach and search and rescue teams were trying to account for them.
