Rod Rosenstein Has Verbally Resigned To John Kelly

"I think the stakes are basically this: This is either the beginning of the end of the Trump presidency or it's the beginning of the end of the Justice Department", he said.

"Not wanting to fire Rod Rosenstein is consistent with what I have understood for weeks, not just days", said Rep. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican who talks to Trump often.

"I've had a lot of false charges made against me", Trump said.

But after a phone conversation with Trump in NY, and meetings in person with White House officials in Washington, Rosenstein returned to Justice Department headquarters with his job and an appointment to return to the White House on Thursday.

The investigation of Russian election interference is a "witch hunt", as Trump repeated, but he also said he would "much prefer to keep Rod Rosenstein" as the second-in-command at the Justice Department.

The president's comments appeared to be good news for Rosenstein, who has been a political target of Trump and his allies in Congress for months.

Rosenstein's job has been in the balance since last week, after it was reported that former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe memorialized meetings in which he claimed Rosenstein broached the idea of wiretapping the president, or using a constitutional amendment to drive him out as commander-in-chief.

Allies such as Fox News host Sean Hannity have accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation of leaking the damaging information on Rosenstein in the hope that Trump would fire him, setting off another firestorm just weeks before elections that will determine political control of Congress.

Rosenstein's departure, though, could throw a cloud of confusion over the election investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, which Trump has called a "witch hunt", and put its future in doubt. That meeting was scheduled after The New York Times reported that Rosenstein allegedly suggested wearing a "wire" while with Trump. Trump has signalled that he may fire Sessions after the midterms, and Rosenstein could go with him.
