Prosecutors said the lies Papadopoulos told slowed the investigation and prevented the FBI from arresting Mifsud before he could leave the United States.

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in October to making false statements to the investigation.

Papadopoulos apparently raised the possibility of setting up a meeting between Trump and Putin during a national security meeting in March 2016.

Moss also looked to Alex Van Der Zwaan's sentence of 30 days in prison, and noted how Van Der Zwaan was a lawyer and expressed far less remorse to the judge at his sentencing compared to Papadopoulos.

Papadopoulos's attorneys had asked for probation for their client and said in court filings that Papadopoulos misled investigators to try to save his professional ambitions and out of a "perhaps misguided loyalty to his master" but not for more sinister reasons.

According to Politico's Kyle Cheney, the Papadapoulos' lawyer blamed Trump saying, "The president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", citing the president's attacks on the investigation as a "witch hunt" and "fake news".

"This was not a noble lie", Moss said.

A federal judge also sentenced Papadopoulos to one year of supervised release and imposed a fine of $9,500.

The DNC's revelation came in court filings Friday in their lawsuit against Russian Federation, the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks for interfering in the 2016 presidential election.

CNN plans to air the full interview with Papadopoulos at 11 pm on Friday. That's the only thing I know about him.

"I hope to have a second chance to redeem myself", Mr. Papadopoulos told the judge at the sentencing hearing.

The memo went on to say that Papadopoulos was "ashamed and remorseful", but he did not always seem that way on social media.

Trump asks if Bob Woodward is 'Dem operative' amid explosive book details
Woodward also prints a summary of the July 2017 meeting written by a senior White House official who spoke with its attendees. After Trump left the room, Woodward wrote, Mattis told people that Trump understood the topic like a "fifth or sixth-grader".

In court Friday, prosecutor Andrew Goldstein said Papadopoulos's cooperation "didn't come close to the standard of substantial assistance".

Told the campaign's priority was to improve relations with Russian Federation, within weeks he made contact with a mysterious professor, Joseph Mifsud, who touted links to the Kremlin.

USA investigators were only alerted to Papadopoulos's activities in mid-2016 after he told Australia's ambassador to London, Alexander Downer, about his talks with Mifsud during a late-night drinking session in a London pub. He publicly contradicted, in his court filing, congressional testimony from Attorney General Jeff Sessions about Sessions' response to the Putin-Trump meeting proposal.

"I made a awful mistake, but I am a good man who is eager for redemption", Papadopoulos said at his sentencing hearing. They said prosecutors have not provided any proof that Papadopoulos "actually harmed the investigation as alleged".

"I made mistakes and I will pay for my mistakes", he said, adding, "I don't want to give up my goal of staying in politics". A federal court kept his July 2017 arrest secret for more than two months after Mueller's office argued that making it public would "significantly undermine his ability to serve as a proactive cooperator".
