Trump challenges Kavanaugh accuser over account of sex attack

The event is the latest effort by allies of President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee to counter the allegation of sexual assault that may have the potential to derail his confirmation to the high court.

The sources said the woman who accused Kavanaugh of an assault three decades ago, California professor Christine Blasey Ford, would testify first, then Kavanaugh. Republicans, led by Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, have demanded Ford accede to an expedited schedule whereby she testifies on Monday alongside Kavanaugh, and without extra witnesses, which many have called unfair and rushed.

"I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents", Trump tweeted. He said that Ford and her attorneys have until Friday to commit to appear at a hearing that could take place Monday about these allegations.

That claim runs contrary to the fact that most sexual assault victims do not report the incidents.

In a letter to Prof Ford's legal team, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said "it is not the FBI's role to investigate a matter such as this". Kavanaugh has categorically denied the allegations.

What has Mr Trump said?

Chrissy Teigen Wants You to Keep Mispronouncing Her Last Name
It's all in good fun, of course (they quite clearly are sickeningly loved up), but it's just bloody amusing and I love it. When one other Twitter person asserted that even Teigen says "tee-gen", the Lip Sync Combat cohost replied, "I do know".

And Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), said the president should call for the FBI to investigate if he wanted to "get to the bottom" of Blasey's account.

The president's tweet brought blistering rejoinders from Democrats and a mix of silence and sighs of regret from his own party.

Moderate GOP Senator Susan Collins of ME, whose vote is critical to Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation in a chamber controlled by Republicans 51-49, said Friday she was "appalled" by Mr Trump's tweet, the Portland Press Herald reported.

The committee and the woman's lawyers have not yet agreed in negotiations over the terms of her appearance before the committee.

Following the Post's report on Ford's account, multiple West Wing officials and outside advisers feverishly phoned Trump on Sunday in the wake of Ford's detailed account of the assault.

Grassley has repeatedly said the accuser deserves to be heard and her information assessed.

Seventy-five women with long-standing associations with Judge Brett Kavanaugh came forward on Friday to voice their defense of the embattled Supreme Court nominee.

Her lawyer, Debra Katz, rejected this and in a phone call to the panel on Thursday spelled out her client's conditions for testifying.

Collins is an important player because she and a handful of other borderline senators could make the difference in the final vote on Kavanaugh in the Senate.

In addition to security, expected to be provided by Capitol Police, Ford has asked for press coverage of her testimony to be the same as for Kavanaugh.

At the rally in Missouri though, there were female Trump supporters who backed up his claim that they want to see Kavanaugh successfully confirmed.

Republican lawmakers are trying to win Senate confirmation for Kavanaugh ahead of the court's start of a new term on October 1, or if not by then, ahead of the November 6 nationwide congressional elections, to show Republican voters they have made good on campaign promises to place conservative judges like Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court.

Trump visits the Carolinas after Florence
Sixteen North Carolina rivers were at major flood stage Tuesday, with an additional three forecasted to peak by Thursday. Hurricane Florence left a path of death and destruction across North Carolina as the storm's remnants head northeast.

"If the White House were to ask the FBI to reopen its file and go conduct the investigation, the FBI could do that", he said.
