Sweden election results: Why Sweden Democrats will NOT form coalition government

Sweden Democrats to boycott public broadcaster following debate controversy

The far-right Sweden Democrats had at times during the campaign appeared to have a shot at becoming the biggest party in the country, but in the end they placed third, capturing 18 percent of initial tallies of the vote.

It said turnout stood at 84.4 percent, up one percentage point from the 2014 elections.

With more than four-fifths of ballots counted, Sweden's national election commission reported the governing Social Democrats had 28.1 percent of the vote, making it likely to lose a significant number of seats despite emerging with the most support.

The "Red Green" combination of the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Left won 40.6 per cent of the vote and (on preliminary figures) 144 seats. They write that the nature of the result means the parties will have to seek new allies.

And earlier today the right-wing populist party reached out to the Moderates and the Christian Democrats from the centre-right bloc - inviting them to negotiate terms if they wanted support.

The trouble is, the two centre-most parties of the centre-right bloc (the Centre and Liberal party) have said that they will not under any circumstances consider that. And rather than countering the Sweden Democrats' anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant rhetoric with a vision of their own, the liberals shifted to the right with proposals that included sending the army into neighborhoods with high crime rates. That third-place finish is their best electoral result.

Doubling of China trade tariffs 'ready to go'
Shares of Apple closed down 0.8 percent in regular Nasdaq trade on Friday, and slipped another 1 percent in extended trading. President Donald Trump uses the tariffs to combat what he calls unfair trade practices by China and other countries.

"It's pretty much inconceivable that the left bloc would be prepared to accept that (Sweden Democrat) support or govern with that support".

The centre-right Alliance was nearly in a dead-heat with 40.3%.

Clifford said the ruling Social Democrats could receive their worst results since 1908 and all parties had said they will not be collaborating with the ruling party, meaning any new regime would have to deal with a fragmented parliament. "But the expected. bang didn't happen".

"So that puts those two parties on the horns of a really, really acute dilemma. I think it's going to be a leftwing government". "And the Social Democrats and a Social Democratic-led government is a guarantee for not letting the Sweden Democrats extremist party, racist party, get any influence in the government".

"This is where it gets very interesting".

The Moderates say they will form a coalition government and have called on Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, a Social Democrat, to step down. The votes of Swedes overseas have not yet been counted, there could be 200,000 votes and we won't get the final vote until Wednesday, so it really is going to be a nailbiter.

Analysts closely watched for pronouncements by Kim that could suggest a new challenge to the USA or a willingness to compromise. The North is attempting to ease tensions with the U.S., following the historic summit between Kim and U.S.

Sweden was looking at weeks of uncertainty and complex coalition talks after the country's two rival blocs failed to secure a clear governing majority in elections that saw a boost for a far-right party - considered political pariahs - amid growing discontent with large-scale immigration.

And yesterday's former fascist sympathizers have morphed, through a long series of reorganizations and name changes, into today's Sweden Democrats.

"That frankly, is an extremely implausible scenario - why would the left bloc consent to an Alliance government when the left bloc is actually a touch bigger than the alliance?" Speculation about viable options includes a combination of the Social Democrats, the Centre Party and Liberal Party, with parliamentary support from the Greens and the Left Party.

"The election is between potential democracy and potential facism", he told AFP.

All traditional parties have shunned cooperation with Sweden Democrats, which makes the government formation unusually hard. "The Sweden Democrats, they've divided people up into us and them".

"No party at this stage is even willing to talk to them. That's what you basically had in Sweden", said Sheri Berman, a professor of politics at Barnard College. "Historically it has been always been this way in Sweden", he said. The Sweden Democrats hotly deny these claims.
