Erdoğan says Idlib assault would be ‘a grave massacre

Turkish officials signaled Tuesday they're willing to intervene to prevent a humanitarian crisis from a planned offensive by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's Idlib province.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the worldwide community to prevent a Syrian government offensive in Syria's Idlib, as the United Nations says it fears the century's "worst humanitarian catastrophe" there.

Lowcock said the United Nations is doing "very detailed planning" to reach up to 800,000 displaced civilians and expects around 100,000 people to flee into government controlled areas with the remaining 700,000 initially fleeing attacks to other areas of Idlib. The Syrian Network for Human Rights, known for its more conservative estimates, has verified over 6,000 civilian deaths caused by Moscow.

"We strongly agree with President Erdogan", Karen Pierce told the UN Security Council citing an op-ed penned by Erdogan.

The Russian military said the footage would include scenes of White Helmets operatives treating supposed victims of an apparent barrel bomb chemical weapon attack by Damascus.

There are also tens of thousands of rebels from Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army groups as well as millions of civilians - many already displaced from other parts of Syria.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is appealing to all parties directly and indirectly involved in Syria - especially Iran, Russia, and Turkey - to protect civilians and avoid a "bloodbath" in the last major rebel-held stronghold in Idlib.

He also noted Turkey's role in protecting the Syrian people, as it hosts the largest number of refugees in the world at 3.5 million. They are believed to be holding them in the Safaa area.

"We have a military presence there and if that military presence is damaged or attacked in any way, it would be considered an attack on Turkey and would therefore receive the necessary retaliation", the source said.
