Japan is bracing for flooding and landslides after what could be the strongest typhoon to hit the country in a quarter of a century made landfall on Tuesday.

He said Jebi may be extremely powerful when it makes landfall.

A man in his 70s died apparently after being blown to the ground from his apartment in Osaka prefecture, while a 71-year-old man died after being buried underneath a storage unit that collapsed on him, officials said.

Typhoon Jebi has hit Japan, and it looks like the effects are going to be devastating.

Schools in the affected areas have also been shut indefinitely.

Typhoon Jebi made landfall around noon, slamming into the west of the country with winds of up to 216 kilometres (135 miles) per hour.

The last "very strong" typhoon that made landfall in Japan was in 1993, Kyodo News reports.

ANA Holdings Inc. and Japan Airlines Co cancelled a total of 585 domestic and 13 global flights, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe cancelled a planned trip to Fukuoka in the southern island of Kyushu to deal with the disaster response.

After hitting western Japan, it is set to speed up further as it passes over the main island of Honshu and into the Sea of Japan, where it will weaken.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a meeting of the government and ruling parties: "We have seen typhoons and torrential rains".

Flights scheduled for September 4 and 5 have been cancelled.

It's now typhoon season in Japan which provides an annual tirade of extreme weather. In Japan, evacuation orders are not mandatory and people often stay at home, only to be trapped by rapidly rising water or sudden landslides.

Since the disaster, authorities have urged people to take evacuation warnings more seriously and prepare to evacuate immediately when the warnings are issued.
