David Anderson, the ABC's director of entertainment and specialist divisions, will act as managing director while a search commences for a new permanent boss.

"The board felt in the end that her leadership style was not the style that we needed going forward", he said.

Senior journalist Sally Neighbour, executive producer of 4 Corners, tweeted: "Excellent decision". He added that Guthrie's relationship with Government "could have been better".

"At no point has any issue been raised with me about the transformation being undertaken, the Investing in Audiences strategy and my effectiveness in delivering against that strategy".

Asked if he was among them, Mr Anderson said he was not.

In a shock move the ABC today sacked managing director Michelle Guthrie after the directors decided it was not in the public broadcaster's best interests for her to continue to lead the organisation.

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek said she was perplexed by the decision and the board's statements had not clarified it.
