Republicans have hired an outside attorney, Phoenix prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, to handle much of their questioning and will avoid having their all-male contingent interrogating Ms Ford about the details of what she describes as a harrowing assault. "It was hard for me to breathe, and I thought that Brett was accidentally going to kill me".

Ford was the first to step forward with allegations and claimed Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, groped her and attempted to pull off her clothes while both were high school students in 1982.

Deborah Ramirez alleged in a report published Sunday by The New Yorker magazine that Kavanaugh exposed himself at a drunken dormitory party and shoved his penis in her face, forcing her to touch it while pushing him away.

Ford has alleged that Kavanaugh's friend, Mark Judge, was in the room watching and laughing.

"Over the past few days, other false and uncorroborated accusations have been aired", he said. As the remaining eight justices met this week to update their caseload for the 2018 term that begins Monday, the man who wants to join them was on Fox TV touting his high school virginity and showcasing a summer 1982 calendar featuring "BEACH WEEK" and ballgames.

"[Democrats] are actually con artists, because they know how quality this man is and they've destroyed a man's reputation, and they want to destroy it even more", Trump told journalists in NY.

The Post found him there Monday, where his lawyer said he had fled to try to avoid an avalanche of press requests and criticism. Richard Blumenthal, Conn., Mazie Hirono, Hawaii, Kamala Harris, Calif., and Sheldon Whitehouse, R.I., - walked out in protest.

That left senators to decide whether the long day of testimony tipped their confirmation votes for or against Trump's nominee in a deeply partisan fight with the future of the high court and possibly control of Congress in the balance. Kavanaugh will testify later, after her session is over. All 47 of the Senate's Democrats and the two independents who caucus with are expected to vote against confirming Kavanaugh.

The latest accusations came Wednesday from Julie Swetnick, who alleged in a sworn statement that Kavanaugh would drink to excess and "engage in abusive behavior" toward teenage girls when he was in high school at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Maryland. He said he "unequivocally and categorically" denied Ford's allegation and vowed he would not back down.

Republicans largely expressed confidence in Mr Kavanaugh ahead of the hearing, emerging from a closed-door lunch with Vice President Mike Pence to say the nominee remains on track for confirmation. "I don't know who this is and this never happened", he said.

Later, the judiciary committee said it had received a fourth allegation, this time in a letter from an anonymous source who said their daughter and others had witnessed Kavanaugh physically assault a woman while intoxicated in Washington in 1998, shoving her "up against the wall very aggressively and sexually".

"The basic principles that underscore the Senate's constitutional duty of advice and consent on federal judicial nominees require nothing less than a careful examination of the accusations and facts by the FBI", Carlson wrote to Chairman Charles Grassley and ranking committee Democrat Dianne Feinstein that, the Post reported.

Anyone could fall in this current political environment, Trump said - even George Washington.

"It's happened to me many times", Trump said, claiming he'd been accused - falsely - by "four or five women".

During her opening statement, Dr. Ford began by explaining to the committee that she wasn't appearing because she wants to be and was terrified.

"Describe her appearance", Kavanaugh said.

Kavanaugh flatly denied the allegations Wednesday in a statement released by the White House.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., noted he was also in the Senate during hearings that have drawn obvious parallels to this one - Hill's testimony during the Thomas confirmation hearings.
