Storm season peaks: Hurricane Florence still far from landfall, uncertainty remains for East Coast

Florence was packing maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour as of late Thursday morning, the hurricane center said.

Florence is forecast to track west through the weekend, forecasters said.

The tropical storm is predicted to re-intensify to a Category 3 hurricane by Monday and odds have increased that it will have direct effects on the East Coast starting between Wednesday and Friday next week anywhere between Florida and southern New England. Life-threatening surf and rip tides are possible.

Forecasters in the Baltimore region say any impacts here remain unclear.

Hurricane Florence has weakened some but will likely strengthen again into a major hurricane and could threaten the US East Coast by next week.

Some forecast models showed Florence slamming into land by late next week, while others indicated the storm would curve away from shore. This is due to some strong southwesterly wind shear aloft.

Hurricane Olivia had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, and was approximately 1,370 miles east of Honolulu as of 11 p.m. local time. The storm is expected to intesify into a major hurricane as it approaches the U.S. East Coast. Hurricane Hunters (airplanes that fly into tropical systems) are stationed in Bermuda and are preparing for flights into the storm.

The NHC said Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight is becoming better organized and is expected to become a tropical depression or tropical storm later today.

A more pressing concern locally this weekend will be potential coastal flooding in Flagler and St. Johns counties, the National Weather Service said. Unfortunately for residents of the Southeast a landfall in the United States was rated the most probable.

The new storms formed just as tropical depression Gordon left flooding and rain behind for the Gulf Coast.
