Tropical Storm Gordon poured rain on the Gulf Coast region Wednesday after it made landfall west of the Alabama-Mississippi border, killing a child in the Florida Panhandle, the National Hurricane Center said.

The National Hurricane Center is no longer issuing advisories on Gordon. Forecasters said radar spotted possible tornados spun off by the storm overnight in southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle.

The system is expected to meet a cold front moving across Oklahoma and produce more rain in the two states while pushing the remnants northward into Missouri. Winds from the storm caused at least one death in Florida when a tree fell onto a mobile home in Escambia County. Beachgoers in the area were being warned Wednesday that it's too early to return to the water; risky rip currents prompted red-flag warnings, meaning it's illegal to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

Gordon continues to weaken and spin over central Mississippi. Rain tapers off early next week and temperatures will remain below through the weekend and early next week.

Power was restored for all of those households by noon Wednesday.

However, despite that good news, Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA and the Auto Club Group, offered a warning about the impact a major storm can have on oil production and gas prices.
