The governors of Virginia, North Carolina and SC have all declared states of emergency.

"All indications are that Florence will be an extremely risky Category 4 hurricane while it moves over the western Atlantic toward the southeastern United States", the hurricane center said.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Florence is expected to become a major hurricane Monday and remain extremely unsafe and powerful as it nears the U.S. Atlantic coast on Thursday.

If Florence continues on its current forecast track, life-threatening conditions will be possible in North Carolina and SC at the end of next week with unsafe storm surge and strong winds possible, in addition to flooding that would impact the coasts and areas further inland.

The storm's sustained winds reached 75 mph (121 kph), just over the threshold for a hurricane, on Sunday morning as it was swirling across the Atlantic, about 750 miles (1,210 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda.

Florence was packing maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour as of late Thursday morning, the hurricane center said. The new storms formed just as tropical depression Gordon left flooding and rain behind for the Gulf Coast.

Cooper said the decision to put evacuation orders in place will be left up to local officials, who best know their communities and residents, but predicted that evacuation orders will likely be issued along the coast in the coming days. As Hurricane Florence approaches the East Coast, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington canceled classes and encouraged its students to leave campus for a safer location.
