Body of 3rd victim of Colorado River boat crash recovered

The bodies of two more boaters were found in the Colorado River on Tuesday after two boats crashed last weekend, sinking both boats and injuring more than a dozen people.

Divers searched the Colorado River in Arizona on Sunday for four people missing after two boats slammed head-on into each other, flinging all aboard into the water, sinking both vessels and injuring nine people, police said on Sunday. Immediately after the collision, people on passing boats helped pull victims from the river water.

The body of Christine Lewis, 51, of Visalia was found in a section of the Colorado River along the California-Arizona border Monday.

The force of the crash caused one of the boats to sink and the other sustained heavy damage. Another seven were taken to hospitals by ambulance and treated for less serious injuries, officials said.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said Monday that investigators had yet to determine what role speed might have played in the accident.

The boats collided between two popular marinas and near Moabi Regional Park, a well-traveled recreation area crowded with people enjoying the Labor Day weekend, the sheriff's office said. Water depth in the area is shallow in some area but can be as deep as 30 feet in other areas.

Other recreational boats raced to the scene to rescue victims.

Helicopters were deployed immediately after the crash was reported and couldn't locate the missing.

Lewis was missing since about 8 p.m. Saturday, when a northbound Hallet boat carrying 10 people collided with a southbound Sleekcraft, which carried six people, according to officials. The sheriff's office added that no one on either boat was wearing a life jacket.

The water carried all of them some distance down the river, some as far as three to five miles from the site of the collision.
