She won her primary to become the Democratic nominee for Governor of Vermont - and could now become the first transgender person elected Governor in American history.

David Hallquist was chief executive of the Vermont Electric Cooperative before publicly transitioning to a female identity while leading the power utility in 2015.

"Well, yes, and I'm not sure I even know what socialism is", Hallquist said.

Ilhan Omar, a refugee from Somalia who came to the U.S. as a teenager, won her Democratic primary in the state's fifth district.

Nehlen trailed behind establishment Republican choice Bryan Steil, who led a crowded field with just over 50% of the votes. Hallquist is running on her managerial abilities, and has promised to boost economic development in rural Vermont by expanding broadband access. He's running for governor in Vermont.

"I love Vermont because we look beyond these surface issues".

She added: "Christine's business experience and progressive vision for Vermont means she's perfectly-positioned to take on Governor Scott - whose approval numbers continue to plunge because of his inability to manage the state government and his failed attempts to hide his conservative policy positions".

There were a lot of questions coming into this primary election around if Scott's strong support for gun control bills this past legislative session would have a major impact on voters in the Republican contest.

During her primary race, she received the backing of Justice Democrats, a progressive political action committee founded by former Bernie Sanders campaign leaders, including The Young Turks' Cenk Uygur, which helped propel leftist superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to her victory over longtime NY 14th Congressional District incumbent Joe Crowley earlier this summer. Still, a poll in July by public media organizations in the state found two-thirds of Vermonters supported the law, and almost half of Democrats had a favourable opinion of Scott.
