His comments came on the back of a historic summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim in Singapore on Jun 12 - the first meeting between the leaders of both countries.

In a tweet, Mr Trump also thanked the North Korean leader for his "nice letter", without elaborating, BBC said.

"The ongoing correspondence between the two leaders is aimed at following up on their meeting in Singapore and advancing the commitments made in the US-DPRK joint statement".

They added that there were "very positive signals" from the meeting , and that it was held in a "friendly atmosphere". His release was eventually secured in May 2014 in exchange for the five Taliban prisoners, who are living in Doha.

"Some have called the Korean War the "forgotten war", said Mr Pence, whose father fought in the conflict. "But soon we will know their names and we will tell their stories of courage".

Military members stood at attention Wednesday at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam after placing transfer cases in a hangar at a ceremony marking the arrival of remains believed to be of American service members who fell in the Korean War.

Meanwhile, 38 North, a U.S. website monitoring the regime, said last month that satellite imagery pointed to the dismantlement of a missile engine testing site in line with Kim's verbal promise to Trump at the summit.

North Korea delivered only one identification tag among the 55 caskets sent home on July 27.

Investigators will also use dental records and chest x-rays to further analyze the remains for a possible identification. Still, the delivery rekindled hopes of continued denuclearization talks with North Korea. The agency has DNA samples from 92 percent of the families of the almost 7,700 Americans still missing from the Korean War. The day of the transfer coincided with the 65th anniversary of the 1953 armistice agreement that put a temporary stop to the war between the North and South. It was later revealed that North Korea didn't actually hand over any remains.

He also declared shortly after the meeting that North Korea's nuclear threat was now over, inviting backlash from critics who slammed the joint statement as lacking in substance.

"But today is just a beginning, and our work will not be complete until all our fallen heroes are accounted for, and home", Pence said.

"We have remains that look to have been in a state of preservation consistent with coming from the Korean War era", he said, and materials provided with the remains included USA -issued military equipment such as canteens and buttons.

"I would go back in an instant if we were asked to", said Byrd who participated in numerous earlier search missions.

"What we saw were remains that were consistent with what we have found from the Korean War recoveries that we've done over the years, and we found remains that were consistent with being Americans", Byrd said, speaking by video teleconference from Hawaii.
