Trump has decried "chain migration", where adult USA citizens can obtain residency for their relatives, and tweeted on November 1, 2017, "CHAIN MIGRATION must end now!"

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, the parents of First Lady Melania Trump, have been sworn in as United States citizens, the Associated Press reported Thursday.

He said the pair had been living in the USA on green cards sponsored by Mrs Trump.

Asked about President Trump's heavy rebuke of family-based migration, Wildes said: "I can't comment on the President's politics when it comes to my clients but I have stood up against the President's immigration policies personally".

In a phone call on Thursday evening, Wildes declined to comment on whether Viktor and Amalija Knavs support President Trump's push to curb family-based sponsorship.

Speaking about Mrs Trump's parents' citizenship ceremony, their lawyer Michael Wildes told CNN: "It went well and they are very grateful and appreciative of this wonderful day for their family".

"He said: 'Hey look, there's people, nice people, they're relaxing, some are jogging, '" Mr Trump said during a rally last week in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, lamenting the lives lost and those who were injured.

It said it is unclear about when or how the couple received green cards.

Trump's plan, which Congress has resisted, would limit immigrants like his wife to sponsoring only their spouses and underage children to join them in the US, not their parents, adult children or siblings.

Trump has vehemently opposed the "chain migration" system, more commonly known as family-based immigration, that lets adult American citizens obtain citizenship for their relatives. Homeland Security Police also escorted the Knavs both in and out of the ceremony, which was held at a federal building in Manhattan.

The Knavses' citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building.

The first lady was born in Slovenia, then part of Yugoslavia, in 1970. According to news reports, Melania came to the United States in 2001 on a so-called Einstein visa for "individuals of extraordinary ability" as a model. Under the law, permanent residents must live in the country for at least five years before applying for citizenship.

Melania grew up in a two bedroom apartment in Sevnica, a small city formerly under communist control.

Mr Knavs was a vehicle dealer while Ms Knavs worked in a textile factory.
