People ride motorcycles along a street next to collapsed shops after an quake in Pemenang, Lombok island, Indonesia, August 2018.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it was focusing its relief efforts on about 20,000 people in remote areas in the north of the island where aid still has not reached.

The national disaster agency said there are still some evacuees that have not yet received aid, especially in the north and west of the island.

Motorcycles parked on the street were seen toppled over, while the walls of other nearby buildings collapsed.

"The quake was felt strongly".

A powerful 5.9-magnitude aftershock has struck Indonesia's Lombok Island just four days after a 6.9-magnitude quake. The announcement came after an inter-agency meeting was called to resolve wildly different figures from various government offices.

The rise in death toll comes as Facebook apologises for automatically decorating posts about the deadly quake with images of balloons and confetti on the social media platform. On Tuesday, the government estimated up to 20,000 people were still in need of assistance in northern Lombok, with around 80% of buildings destroyed.

The quake came just days after a smaller magnitude 6.4 tremblor shook the island on 29 July.

Thousands of tourists have been evacuated from Lombok and the Gili Islands.

He also says they're continuing to look for people with untreated injuries.

Across much of the island, once-bustling villages have been turned into virtual ghost towns, with residents sleeping out in the open - scared to stay near their shattered homes amid hundreds of aftershocks.

Those without homes now have been accommodated in shelters and tents and authorities have also built makeshift tents with medical facilities to treat the injured.

The island was still recovering after two other recent earthquakes when the tremor happened.

Officials said the quake's epicentre was on land and so there was no risk of a tsunami.

Some evacuees have complained of being ignored or experiencing long delays for supplies to arrive at shelters.

Yet social media companies must take better precautions when designing features to be used during disasters such as the Lombok quake, according to Siane Monreal, social media manager for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
