Paul Manafort's lawyers conclude trial without calling any witnesses

Prosecutors are presenting their closing argument in the financial fraud trial of onetime Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

This Aug. 7, 2018, courtroom sketch depicts Rick Gates, right, testifying during questioning in the bank fraud and tax evasion trial of Paul Manafort at federal court in Alexandria, Va. U.S. district Judge T.S. Ellis III presides at top right. His lawyers say they believe the prosecution hasn't met its burden of proof in the case.

Before closing arguments, Ellis ruled against the defense's motion to acquit.

Prosecutors allege Manafort knowingly misled banks about his income in order to secure personal loans he needed to fund a lavish lifestyle and to service debts including hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on baseball tickets.

The case against Manafort does not relate to any allegations of Russian election interference or possible coordination with the Trump campaign, the main thrust of Mueller's investigation.

Asked why the club have struggled to recruit players this summer, Pochettino replied: "The market was insane ". It's so clear what's going on at the club in the past and present and how we are going to move in the future.

The case was the first to be tried in the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, which is focused on possible illegal collusion between President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign and Russian Federation.

The prosecution wrapped up on Monday and called up more than two dozen people to testify.

Mr Manafort, who has pleaded not guilty, also declined to testify.

Still, the proceedings have drawn President Donald Trump's attention - and prompted tweets - as the president has worked to undermine the standing of the Mueller investigation in the public square.

"The plea deal that [Mueller] gave to Gates is shameful", McCarthy said Tuesday on "Outnumbered".

Prosecutors are typically allowed a final rebuttal argument before the judge gives instructions and finally hands the case over for jury of six men and six women to determine Manafort's fate.

"Any purported misstatements regarding Mr. Manafort's income or credit card debt were immaterial" to the bank's decision about whether to make the loans, according to the filing.

At one point in the discussion, Ellis asked prosecutors whether they thought he had ever interjected his own opinions.

"He is not above the law", Andres said.
