China lodged its challenge at the WTO on Tuesday, the statement said.

American tariffs on solar imports and subsidies for domestic companies are harming Chinese industry and risk eroding the World Trade Organisation's authority, Beijing claimed, as it made a formal complaint to the organisation.

The Trump administration in January announced it was imposing "Safeguard tariffs" over four years, with a 30 percent tariff in the first year reduced gradually to 15 percent in year four.

In the latest development, Turkey announced Wednesday that it will increase tariffs on US imports including rice, vehicles, alcohol, coal and cosmetics, in response to Trump's decision last Friday to double the tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum. The U.S. president has recently threatened more tariffs on Canada's auto industry.

Washington took action under the United States 1974 Act in place of the World Trade Organization.

The U.S. measures are suspected of violating WTO Agreement on Safeguards. That led to complaints it was undermining the global trade body.

China has tried to portray itself as a defender of the WTO's trade system.

Both the safeguard and the subsidies "have seriously damaged China's trade interests", said the spokesperson, before adding: "We urge the U.S. to take concrete actions, respect the rules of the WTO, and abandon the wrong practices so that the relevant trade can be restored to normal track".
