At least 82 people were killed and hundreds injured as a powerful natural disaster magnitude 7.0 hit Indonesian tourist island of Lombok on Sunday.

A powerful natural disaster struck the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok on Sunday, shaking neighboring Bali, one week after another quake on Lombok killed more than a dozen. On Lombok, thousands fled from their homes to gather for safety in open spaces.

A magnitude 6.4 quake hit Lombok on July 29, killing 16 people.

He said the agency was still collecting data on the injured.

It was the second deadly quake in a week to hit Lombok.

Hundreds of bloodied and bandaged victims were treated outside damaged hospitals in the main city Mataram and other hard-hit parts of the island.

Singapore Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was on the 10th floor of a hotel in the Lombok town of Mataram at the time of the quake, wrote on Facebook that his room shook violently and walls cracked.

"It was quite impossible to stand up. Heard screams", he wrote. "Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking. Lots of cracks, fallen doors".

Power and communications were cut in some areas of Lombok, and the military said it was sending in a vessel with medical aid, supplies and logistical support for the island.

Travelers at the worldwide airports in Lombok and Bali were thrown into panic and there was minor damage to the buildings but operations were not disrupted, officials said.

An Indonesian official says at least three people have been killed after a strong quake struck the popular tourist island of Lombok.

Video showed screaming people running in panic from houses in a Bali neighborhood and vehicles rocking.

Other witnesses said the quake got stronger over several seconds and rattled windows and doors in their frames.

In 2004 a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea natural disaster off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.

The warning was lifted after waves just 15 centimeters (6 inches) high were recorded in three villages, said Dwikorita Karnawati, the head of Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.
