Amid escalating tension between Washington and Ankara, the USA embassy in the Turkish capital came under attack as unknown persons fired several gunshots at it on Monday.

Relations between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have plummeted in one of their worst crises in decades after the detention of Mr Brunson on terror-related charges. The embassy is closed this week for a public holiday to mark the Islamic Eid al-Adha festival.

The attack took place at 5.30 a.m. local time when six shots were fired from a white vehicle at the U.S. Embassy's main entrance.

U.S. Embassy spokesman David Gainer thanked police for their "rapid response".

Another minor downside might be if you don't check your email a lot, and then the message expires before you've seen it. Recipients may still be able to do things like take screenshots of emails or even using a camera to take a picture.

The shooting come as Ankara and Washington were locked in a bitter dispute over Turkey's detention of an American pastor on terror-related charges.

Police are hunting the assailants, who fired four or five shots from a moving vehicle. Four or five gunshots were heard, it said, one hitting a window in a security cabin but causing no casualties.

The Turkish Police has launched an investigation into the attack and its perpetrators.

It added empty cartridges were found at the scene.

Meanwhile, the Turkish foreign ministry said measures were taken to "ensure the security of the USA embassy in Ankara, other United States missions and their personnel" across the country.

A top official in Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party said the attack was a "clear provocation" and that foreign diplomatic missions are guests of the country. "The incident is being investigated and will be clarified as soon as possible".
