Police: Newspaper gunman planned deadly attack carefully

A woman climbed up the robes of the statue as part of a protest to the separation of migrant families and remained up there for almost three hours before law enforcement managed to take her into custody.

News helicopter video showed the climber sitting Wednesday by the bottom of the statue's robes, about 100 feet above ground.

The woman apologized to the officers who had to come up to get her, police said.

Earlier and farther below, at least six people were arrested after unfurling a banner that read "Abolish I.C.E". The other protesters, also with Rise and Resist, held a banner over the railing at the base of the statue. The group, of which half a dozen were arrested, was demonstrating against the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.

A woman climbed onto the base of the iconic Statue of Liberty on Wednesday (local time) in protest of President Donald Trump's immigration policies and family separations. She abandoned the climb and the rescuers took her into custody. At first, he said Okoumou was not friendly with police, but after some conversation, she began trusting the officers.

According to the New York Daily News, law enforcement attempted to talk the woman down for several hours before they used climbing gear to apprehend her. "At first, she wasn't friendly with us, but we took the time to get a rapport with her so that took a while", he said. After a three hour standoff, police officers cornered the woman and helped her down, then took her into custody.

The National Park Service chose to shut down Liberty Island over security concerns around 3:30 p.m., and within an hour all 4,500 visitors had been evacuated.

"She is refusing to co-operate and our efforts to engage her are ongoing at this minute", Sgt. David Somma, a spokesman for the National Park Service, told Reuters.

6 women, 4 men blindfolded, hung from ceiling in India
The bodies were blind-folded and gagged, and were found hanging from the ceiling of the house opposite Guru Govind Singh Hospital. One of the bodies was found lying on the floor and the others hanging from a railing attached to the ceiling, media reports said.

Okoumou is a member of the group Rise and Resist.

The woman had participated earlier in displaying a banner calling for abolishing the federal government's chief immigration enforcement agency, said Jay W. Walker, an organizer with Rise and Resist, which arranged the demonstration.

While the policy was abandoned, it is still unclear how and when some 2,000 migrant children will be reunited with their parents. "We don't condemn her for the choice she made, and we're going to do anything we can to support her", he said.
