The U.S. State Department declined to comment on the reported meeting with the Afghan insurgency.

A top source in the Taliban has revealed that a high ranking usa official, Alice Wells, held talks with the Taliban leadership in Qatar earlier this week.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and Voice of America (VOA) reported that Alice Wells, the top USA diplomat for South Asia, led the United States team in these talks.

Top U.S. and Afghan officials don't focus exclusively on the grim statistics, but also on the more implicit signs of optimism-especially what they consider a surprising three-day cease fire earlier this month, when Taliban fighters took selfie photos with Afghan soldiers across the country...

His solid defensive showings and set-piece prowess have earned him many admirers, Jose Mourinho being one of them. To play for probably the best club in the world is a good thing and for me it's an honour to play here.

Earlier in the month, the United States expressed readiness to initiate direct talks with the Taliban in an attempt to end a 17-year-old war in Afghanistan, a significant shift in American policy in the conflict-ridden country.

The Taliban officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the diplomatic sensitivities around the talks, which were initially reported by The Wall Street Journal. They added that there were "very positive signals" from the meeting, and that it was held in a "friendly atmosphere". The Times also reports this strategy will likely ensure the Taliban remains in control of vast stretches of the countrywide, where the majority of Afghans live.

NYT noted that the Taliban have long maintained an informal "political office" in Doha for the objective of restarting the long-dormant peace process.

He later tweeted that work on documents was "moving along quickly", adding that the meeting with Mr Juncker had "great warmth". The EU is prepared to retaliate "immediately" if talks fail, he warned.

Taliban's five-year rule over at least three quarters of Afghanistan came to an end when the USA and its allies invaded the Asian country on October 7, 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror. As stated by the Taliban, we can expect more and more such meeting between the US, Afghanistan and the Taliban for purposeful dialogues.

In Kabul on Saturday, Shah Hussain Murtazawi, deputy spokesman for Ghani, repeated the government's oft-stated position that peace talks should be 'Afghan owned and Afghan led, any assistance the allies provide [would be in] a supportive role'. The Taliban have long-awaited direct talks with the U.S. as a precondition to discuss their security concerns and the future of Afghanistan.

A former Taleban minister and ex-head of their political committee, Aga Jan Mohtism, who has maintained close contacts with the insurgent group, also confirmed a meeting in Doha between USA officials and the Taleban took place earlier this week. The US media say the White House has ordered American diplomats to seek direct negotiations with the Taliban.

His release was eventually secured in May 2014 in exchange for the five Taliban prisoners, who are living in Doha.
