Trump is said to have particularly liked Hardiman's life story. He's the first person in his family to graduate college, paying for it by driving taxis.

Hardiman holds a consistently conservative voting record.

In 2017, when Hardiman was last considered for a Supreme Court seat, he had the support of the president's sister, Maryanne Trump Barry. He called it the "fruit of a corrupt process straight from the D.C. swamp". Judge Kavanaugh also served as a Counsel for the Office of Independent Counsel under Ken Starr and as a Partner at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP.

In his dozen years on the court, Kavanaugh has been involved in some 286 opinions. He recently voiced disagreement with a court decision allowing an undocumented teenage immigrant to get an abortion. "This is an opportunity for Senators to put partisanship aside and consider his legal qualifications with the fairness, respect, and seriousness that a Supreme Court nomination ought to command".

"The indictment and trial of a sitting President, moreover, would cripple the federal government, rendering it unable to function with credibility in either the global or domestic arenas", Kavanaugh wrote in a 2012 piece titled "Separation of Powers During the FortyFourth Presidency and Beyond" for the Minnesota Law Review.

Judge Kavanaugh now faces what could be a hard fight for confirmation by the US Senate, where Republicans hold only a slim majority. And that is a big if.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has been targeting three Democratic senators who are up for re-election in red states that Trump won in 2016, including West Virginia Sen. Other Democrats who represent heavily Republican states will also be under pressure to support the nominee.

The conservative senator tweeted Monday that he looks forward to the upcoming Senate hearings, reviewing the circuit court judge's record "and meeting personally with Judge Kavanaugh, with an open mind". "But given how entrenched in the culture Roe v. Wade is ... it would amaze me if the court voted in a majority to overturn it".
