Two years down the line the British electorate remains polarized but still committed to Brexit.

The UK government outlined plans earlier this month for a new "facilitated customs arrangement" which would have no need for customs checks and controls between the UK and European Union, but which would allow the UK to control its own tariffs for trade with the rest of the world.

That "soft Brexit" plan had cost May great domestic political capital in a cabinet riven by divisions over Brexit seen by some as conceding too much control to the EU.

"There are other points on which we have a problem because they contradict, they clash with, the European Council guidelines", Mr Barnier added.

Barnier say afterward: "The EU can not and the EU will not delegate the application of its customs policy and rules.to a non-member who would not be subject to the EU's governance structures".

In an interview with 5 News on Wednesday, the Prime Minister did not deny stockpiling is happening, but said the Government is being "responsible and sensible" while still trying to get a good deal with the European Union.

While UK proposals on security marked "a real step forward" and he welcomed the acknowledgement that the European Court of Justice was the only arbiter of EU law, he added: "In contrast, on our future economic relationship, it comes as no surprise that finding common ground between the EU27 and the UK is more hard".

"Theresa May will have been watching the press conference through her fingers".

"It will certainly be something that we bring up and talk about", the U.S. president said.

Speaking to BI following Barnier's comments, Fox insisted that the prime minister's Chequers plan was not dead, and accused the European Union of putting "political ideology" before both a Brexit deal and the wellbeing on European Union citizens. "Those plans are ambitious, principled and pragmatic.", insisted Raab.

For the first time a majority of people now support a second Brexit referendum.

"Asked whether there should be a referendum on the final terms of any Brexit deal, 42 percent said there should be a fresh vote while 40 percent said there should not".

Ms May's letter to MPs came on the same day recently appointed Brexit secretary Dominic Raab told a parliamentary select committee that he was not anxious about the possibility of the United Kingdom leaving the bloc without a deal.

Mr Grieve said he did not believe Mrs May is at risk, but added: "The only group that could possibly bring the Prime Minister down is if the group of my hard Brexit colleagues so lose the plot that they decide that is an effective way for them to proceed".
