Apple and Samsung settle their patent dispute after 7 years of legal battles

A seven-year patent infringement battle over Samsung's copying of several major iPhone features is finally over, the judge in the case has confirmed.

The lawsuit started in 2011, when Apple alleged infringement of patents, trademarks, user interface and style against Samsung's then-new Nexus Android phones. Apple was awarded $539 million in May by a United States jury; prior to the award, Samsung had already paid Apple $399 million, so Samsung had an outstanding payment of $140 million, according to Reuters.

The court filing document, which is available online, states that the plaintiff Apple and defendant Samsung "have agreed to drop and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter".

The settlement asks that all claims in the case be dismissed with prejudice (meaning they could not be re-filed) and that both companies pay their own legal fees.

When contacted by AFP for comment, Apple referred to a statement released last month after the jury announced the damages award.
