A US military spokesman, Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, said USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces continue to adhere to a unilateral, week-long cease-fire declared last week by Ghani.

Mr. Fazlullah has been the most-wanted militant in Pakistan for years.

He has in the past been blamed for attacks such as the December 2014 attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar that killed 151 people, including more than 130 children.

She became a global symbol for human rights after a gunman boarded her school van on October 9, 2012, asked "Who is Malala?" and shot her.

In 2014 she won the Nobel Prize, and earlier this year she made an emotional return to Pakistan for the first time since the shooting.

In January, US President Donald Trump cut more than $1.1bn in military assistance to Pakistan over allegations that it was providing safe haven to members of the Afghan Taliban and Haqqani Network.

Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Radmanish told the foreign media that Fazlullah "was a terrorist leader" and "his death will have a multifaceted impact".

Afghan officials and militant figures on Friday were investigating reports that the leader of the Pakistani Taliban may have been killed in a USA airstrike inside Afghanistan, but his fate remained unclear.

The official said the status of Fazlullah was unclear.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, echoing Ghani's announcement on Saturday, said peace talks would have to include a discussion on the role of "international actors and forces".

Taliban militants headed into cities across Afghanistan on Sunday as they continued to celebrate their Eid ceasefire with feasts and selfies, raising questions about what happens when the ceasefire ends at midnight.

Fazlullah assumed leadership of the Pakistani Taliban after Hakimullah Mehsud was killed in a US drone strike in 2013. Local reports on June 14 said he was killed.

However, Sakhi Mashwani, a Parliamentarian from Kunar province told the Associated Press that Fazlullah, along with five other insurgents, died when the strike slammed into the vehicle in which they were driving.

Mehsud, 40, was the TTP's Karachi chief from June 2013 until May 2015 and is the author of the book "Inqilab-e-Mehsud", in which he claimed to have assassinated former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

The Pakistani military said in a statement Friday that Fazlullah's death "gives relief to scores of Pakistani families who fell victims to TTP terror".

Meanwhile, Kabul and Washington both complain that Pakistan has for years allowed Afghanistan's Taliban free movement as well as medical treatment for battlefield wounds.

Fazlullah had ordered her killing for promoting girls' education.
