World number one Simona Halep gets a fourth chance to finally win a Grand Slam title when she starts as favourite in the French Open final against American Sloane Stephens on Saturday.

Stephens is 6-0 in career final appearances and one of those victories came on clay court.

"Not the trophy I wanted", Stephens said, looking at her runner-up plate, "but it's still lovely".

So when, 12 months on, Halep found herself a set and a break down to Sloane Stephens and staring at a fourth grand slam final defeat, she chose to do something about it.

Halep's victory at Roland Garros comes ten years after she won the tournament as a junior and 40 years after another Romanian, Virginia Ruzici, also won the French Open.

"I believed in that, and my game was more relaxed".

He led from the start and was chased home by Gronkowski , formerly trained in Britain by Jeremy Noseda, with Hofburg in third. It shows a horse eating the flowers off a women's hat and the jockey reimbursing her in the winner's circle with Quick Pay.

Halep lost two previous finals at Roland Garros - against Maria Sharapova in 2014, then Jelena Ostapenko in 2017 despite leading by a set and 3-0 in the second.

Suddenly Halep had won 12 of 13 points and snatched the momentum, and she made it four games on the spin as Stephens dumped consecutive forehands into the net. Because being number one without a Grand Slam, I always said, is not like everything, not 100 percent.

Simona Halep was so desperate to end her grand slam drought she could barely breathe as she served for the French Open.

"Show the world your trophy", Stephens said when asked what she had told the victor. Because a year ago I was a little bit defensive when I was leading the match, and now I just change it in my mind.

Stephens, moving silkily from side-to-side, out-Haleped Halep to move 4-1 in front, however, turning herself into a human backboard to return everything being thrown at her. Stephens has shown her mental toughness in defeating close friend Madison keys to win the US Open title in 2017. His final season came just months after Sloane was born.

Halep is more emotive on court and her tenacity has earned her an army of fans.

But this gesture towards her coach Darren Cahill was more than a celebratory pose, it was a sign that this was 'the new Simo'. In the victory, Halep won 61 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. "My head won it".

Romania's Simona Halep celebrates after winning the final against Sloane Stephens of the U.S. in Paris June 9, 2018. It's the first semifinal between a pair of American women at Roland Garros since Serena Williams beat Jennifer Capriati on her way to the 2002 title.

"I think now I've matured a little bit and have recognised the opportunities when they have been presented".

It hasn't all been plain sailing since, though, as she suffered a severe hangover after her NY triumph and failed to win in the rest of 2017.

Winning Grand Slams is paramount to that. After leveling the match at a set apiece, Halep looked sharper and more energetic in the first couple of games in the third set.

Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Garbiñe Muguruza that took 17 games to decide.

She'll reach the top five anyway next week, but what happened just after the 2-0 lead wound up ratifying the idea of Halep as a fighter, an idea cemented when she lost the 2018 Australian Open final to Caroline Wozniacki in three sets and wound up treated for dehydration.

The Serbian, who is not committed to any event before The Championships, commented: 'I don't know if I'm going to play on grass . Cecchinato was found guilty of match-fixing in 2016 but his suspension was overturned by the Italian Olympic Committee.

Stephens was a set and a break up on Halep before the Romanian's greater stamina told in the final.
