Former Trump aide ordered to jail after bail revoked

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort arrives at the courthouse in Washington yesterday for a hearing

"Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort, who has represented Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other top political people and campaigns", Trump tweeted Friday afternoon, just before turning his attention to former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey and Hillary Clinton.

Manafort, who was indicted on witness tampering charges last week, had asked to remain on house arrest until his first trial on September 17.

Manafort will learn whether he must await trial in prison or can remain on house arrest following allegations that he tried to obstruct the Russian Federation inquiry.

USA TODAY is providing live coverage outside the federal courthouse where Manafort is testifying beginning at 10:00 am ET in the player above.

The judge said that, although she had "struggled" with the decision, she couldn't "turn a blind eye" to his behavior.

"This is not middle school", she told lawyers.

"I feel bad about a lot of it because I think a lot of it is very unfair", he said.

Prosecutors say the two men tried to get two witnesses to say that lobbying work on behalf of Ukraine and carried out by clandestinely paid former politicians occurred only in Europe and not the US, a contention the witnesses said they knew was false.

"They've gone back 12 years to find things about somebody, and I don't think it's right", he said. The witnesses were former business associates who worked on an effort to promote Yanukovych among European leaders and get them to make statements in support.

Andres replied that "it's inconceivable that he (Manafort) doesn't know that they're potential witnesses".

None of the charges against them relate to alleged collusion with Russian Federation.

Prosecutors argued on Friday that Manafort could continue to engage in alleged criminal activity if he is not jailed.

Manafort's attorneys have accused prosecutors of conjuring a "sinister plot" out of "innocuous" contacts.

The indictment was unsealed last week against Manafort and Konstantin Kilimnik just days after prosecutors accused the two men of attempting to tamper with witnesses. Manafort is accused of money laundering, as well as tax and bank fraud charges.

The judge said sending Manafort to a cell was "an extraordinarily hard decision" but said his conduct - allegedly conspiring to contact witnesses in the case in an effort to get them to lie to investigators - left her little choice.

Andres said Manafort had carried out a "sustained campaign" over five weeks to influence the witnesses' testimony, which he said was part of Manafort's "history of deception in this case".

He has also pleaded not guilty to those charges.

Prosecutors have said that Manafort's role in the campaign and long-standing ties to Russian-backed politicians, financiers and others merited investigation into whether any of them served as back channels to Russia.
