'Excitement in the air' ahead of Kim meeting

The Harebrained Summit

President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong-un spent Monday huddling with advisers in luxury Singapore hotels less than half a mile apart, readying for a nuclear summit that could define the fate of millions, and their own political futures.

In a tweet on Monday, he said: "Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!"

While North Korea spoke of establishing a new "permanent peace-keeping mechanism" and its state-run news agency hailed a "new era" in relations with the US, Trump tweeted about how pleased he was to be in Singapore.

Trump descended from Air Force One into the steamy Singapore night, greeting officials and declaring he felt "very good" before being whisked away to his hotel via a route lined with police and photo-snapping onlookers.

Kim had "expressed his deep thanks to the Singaporean government for its honest cooperation of providing all conditions and best conveniences for the historic DRPK-US summit meeting", KCNA reported.

Both sides also worked to finalize preparations for the unprecedented summit.

The understated photo op belied the intensive behind-the-scenes negotiations that continued between the US and North Korean delegations less than 24 hours before Trump was scheduled to meet Kim at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, just off Singapore's southern coast.

"Thank you very much", Trump said to reporters, as he turned to enter the banquet hall.

Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary.

Lee met Kim on Sunday, hours after Kim arrived at Changi Airport on a Chinese plane, making his furthest overseas journey since becoming North Korean leader.

One dispatch by the Korean Central News Agency said North Korea and the U.S. would exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" on establishing new relations, building a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism", achieving denuclearization and "other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era".

Travelling with him were top officials including foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, defence minister No Kwang Chol and Kim Yong Chol, a close aide who has been instrumental in the diplomacy that culminated in Tuesday's summit.

But critics have warned that the meeting risks being largely light on substance considering what is believed to be a wide gap between the US and the North on the denuclearization issue.

He initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.

Security around Kim's hotel was extremely tight and guests were prohibited from going in and out, hours before Kim's black Mercedes Benz limousine cruised in.

But, prior to leaving Canada, the mercurial president again changed his tune, calling it a "one-time shot" and adding that he would know "within the first minute" of meeting Kim whether an agreement will be possible.

But this gesture towards her coach Darren Cahill was more than a celebratory pose, it was a sign that this was 'the new Simo'. In the victory, Halep won 61 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. "My head won it".

Many experts on North Korea, one of the most insular and unpredictable countries in the world, remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon its cherished nuclear weapons.
