Yesterday, the Canadian government rejected the Senates recommended amendments, sent back the bill and late last night it was approved as is with a vote of 52 in favour, and 29 against.

Although the Canadian government had initially stated its intent to implement by July 2018, provinces and territories, who will be responsible for drafting their own rules for marijuana sales, have advised that they would need eight to 12 weeks after the Senate approval to transition to the new framework.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced plans to legalize the drug in April 2017, has rebuffed provincial leaders who say they need more time.

Once the act comes into force, adults who are 18 or 19 years of age and older (depending on the province or territory) will be able to legally purchase, grow and use a limited quantity of cannabis.

'We're going to have all those involved in illegal marijuana peddling right now becoming large corporation, ' Conservative Senator Leo Housakos said.

Speaking today, Trudeau said: "We have been talking about this since well before we formed government".

Based on consumption data from a year ago, Statistics Canada has estimated that the market will be worth Can$5.7 billion (€3.7 billion).
