A strong natural disaster hit Osaka city on Monday morning, rattling one of Japan's industrial heartlands, but appearing to spare the region of any major damage.

The 7:58 a.m. quake occurred at a depth of about 13 kilometers in the northern part of Osaka Prefecture, where it registered lower 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Japanese media reported one of the quake's victims is a 9-year-old girl found at a school in Takatsuki City.

The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Osaka has opened an emergency hotline following a 6.1 Richer scale natural disaster striking the prefecture on Monday morning.

Footage on national broadcaster NHK showed flooding from burst underground water pipes, train passengers forced to exit along train lines, and schoolchildren gathering outside in precautionary evacuations.

The morning commute was disrupted as train and subway service in the Osaka area including the bullet train were suspended to check for damage to equipment.
