The top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee will vote for Gina Haspel to be the next CIA director, all but ensuring President Donald Trump's pick to lead the agency will have enough votes to win Senate confirmation.

Warner and Heitkamp's endorsement follows Haspel support from Democratic Sens.

She is expected to be confirmed by the full Senate as soon as next week, although that vote likely also will be close.

Haspel - who would replace now-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the role - has gotten support from lawmakers on the left.

Amid criticism of Gina Haspel for her role in the Central Intelligence Agency's enhanced interrogation techniques like waterboarding, one green beret made a decision to argue that waterboarding wasn't actually torture.

"I have learned the hard lessons since 9-11", Haspel wrote.

An undercover officer for most of her 33-year career, Haspel in 2002 served as CIA station chief in Thailand, where the agency conducted interrogations at a secret prison using methods including waterboarding, which is widely viewed as torture.

Amid an intensifying public debate on torture, President Donald Trump's pick to head the CIA on Tuesday said the harsh interrogation program the agency ran at black sites after the September 11 attacks should not have been undertaken. A number of Democrats and two Republicans, Rand Paul and John McCain, have said they'll oppose her confirmation because of her role in supervising the use of the disputed techniques on suspected terrorists in the years after the September 11 attacks.

Warner, whose home state of Virginia houses the CIA's headquarters, has an important constituency to consider, and has been complimentary of Haspel in the past. Her written comments went farther than ones she made at her confirmation hearing.

McCain, a war hero who was tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, is one of just two Republicans who have announced they will vote against her. Stand with John McCain against torture.

"See, I think people who have actually been tortured who are saying this is not a good thing, you should listen to them because you have never been tortured", she told Trump. A committee vote is expected Wednesday. It was President Obama who decided that John Brennan, Jose Rodriguez, Gina Haspel and others involved in the torture program should not face prosecution.
