Two Nepalese Sherpas, a man and a woman, on Wednesday set new world records for most ascents the world's highest peak, Mount Everest.

The 48-year-old Sherpa successfully reached the 8,848-metre high peak on Wednesday morning, breaking the previous record of 21 climbs jointly held by fellow Nepalis Appa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa.

Kami made his first scaled Everest in 1994 when he was 24 years old. He plans to summit the mountain at least three more times - meaning he'll set three more records.

Ms Lhakpa, 44, reached the peak for a ninth time via the northern Tibetan route, her brother Mr Mingma Gelu Sherpa said.

Mr Kami Rita Sherpa, a professional guide, and Ms Lhakpa Sherpa, who works in a supermarket in CT, reached the summit from opposite sides of the 8,848m mountain yesterday.

More than 340 foreign climbers along with their local guides are attempting to climb Everest this month.

Lhakpa stood at the top of Everest early on Wednesday too. "But I am not overexcited as it is a part of my professional job", Kami shared with Xinhua before leaving Kathmandu for expedition. According to the Himalayan Database, a record of expeditions in the Himalayas since 1903, out of 8,306 Everest summits so far, 5,280 have happened from Nepal and 3,026 from Tibet. The next most accomplished female Everest climber is American Melissa Sue Arnot, who has reached the top six times.

"The risks are higher when 99 percent of climbers are going up as tourists", said Reinhold Messner, an Italian climber who was the first to ascend Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen.

Several veteran climbers and well-respected Western climbing companies have moved their expeditions to the northern side of the mountain in Tibet in recent years, saying rising temperatures and inexperienced climbers have made the icefall more vulnerable.
