With rain wiping out the first day of the highly anticipated test match between Pakistan and Ireland, both the teams will be looking forward to the remaining four days.

Boyd Rankin, who had previously taken one scalp in a lone Test appearance for England before switching allegiance to his native country, was the man to provide the breakthrough, becoming Ireland's first wicket-taker in the five-day format, producing an edge to second slip to reduce Pakistan to 13/1. At lunch, Rankin had impressive figures of one wicket for seven runs in seven overs, with Murtagh - one for 12 in seven - only marginally more expensive. Azhar lobbed to Ireland captain Will Porterfield at second slip and his opening partner was then trapped lbw by Tim Murtagh.

On the other hand, the Pakistani cricket team will not be taking the Irish lightly, because Ireland will look to do what no side has done in 141 years: win their inaugural test match.

Ireland's building momentum was halted, however, as the Pakistan tail began to wag when Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf dug in to take the total beyond 200 at the start of the third session after tea.

William Porterfield's decision was rewarded nearly immediately as Rankin and Murtagh, among the more senior members in the side, picked up a wicket each to break Pakistan down to 13 for 2 inside the first ten overs.

Ireland were awarded Test status previous year by the ICC and it was confirmed in October that Pakistan would be the first opponents for the new boys. Shafiq square-cut Kane for four, with left-hander Haris glancing Thompson for a legside boundary.

Faheem, however, did have a break when, on 36, he edged Rankin only for a diving Niall O´Brien to miss the catch and give the obscured Gary Wilson at first slip no chance of taking the ball.

Shafiq, however, was starting to open up his body and take on the bowlers, dispatching the ball to all areas of the Malahide oval, his half century following soon after.

Just before stumps was called, Ashraf slammed spinner Paul Stirling over long on for the only six of the day.

Despite being the first team to lose their entire opening day of Test match cricket, Deutrom refused to be deflated.
