May appoints British Pakistani as new home secretary

On Monday (Tuesday NZT), her replacement was named: Sajid Javid, a successful investor, experienced government minister and the first ethnic minority to hold the position of Home Secretary.

Rudd then chose to resign rather than face the Commons on Monday, with her letter to May saying she had "become aware of information provided to my office which makes mention of targets".

The ruling Conservatives are opposed to such a move, made under a rarely-used procedure called "motion for a return", which involves asking the Queen to direct her ministers to provide the requested documents to the Commons Home Affairs Committee.

It came amid the Windrush scandal, in which some migrants who settled in the United Kingdom between the 1940s and 1973 were wrongly being declared illegal immigrants.

The Prime Minister defended targets for the removal of illegal immigrants as she confirmed the practice was in place when she was home secretary.

"If you talk to members of the public, they want to ensure that we are dealing with people who are here illegally", May told broadcasters.

He has rejected the controversial "hostile environment" tag attached to the government's immigration policy.

Rudd's resignation had become inevitable when leaks showed the extent of her knowledge about targets for removing illegal migrants.

Mr Javid said the phrase "hostile" was "unhelpful and does not represent our values as a country", preferring "a compliant environment".

His appointment is widely seen as a way for British Prime Minister Theresa May to curtail the backlash from the so-called Windrush scandal, which brought to light the unfair treatment of Commonwealth citizens from Jamaica over a lack of citizenship documentation.

Mahmoud Abbas Holocaust remarks spark outrage from USA and Israeli officials
The Holocaust has been a long time fascination for Abbas. "But it was likely much smaller, perhaps less than a million". He also said it was a historical "fact" that no Jews were attacked in the Arab nations in the last 1,400 years.

Johnson said he was "really sad" to lose her from the Cabinet.

But after an often passionate five-hour debate about how some citizens of Caribbean origin who arrived in the United Kingdom from the 1950s onwards were wrongly targeted as part of the "hostile environment" immigration policy, a three-line Conservative whip saw the government win by 316 votes to 221.

Rudd, who was lauded for her handling of terror attacks in Britain in 2017, wrote to May: "It is with great regret that I am resigning as home secretary".

The prime minister's critics note that it was May - not Rudd - who was responsible for the changes in immigration rules that led to doctors, landlords and employers checking people's immigration status. Ms Rudd was the fifth person to quit the Cabinet since last June's snap general election, which cost the Conservatives their majority in Parliament.

The furor began weeks ago when the Guardian newspaper reported that some people from the Caribbean who have lived in Britain for decades had been refused medical care or threatened with deportation because they couldn't produce paperwork proving their right to reside in the country. Others have been told by the government that they are in Britain illegally and must leave.
