Four sword-wielding assailants were shot dead with another nabbed, and one police officer was killed in the attack, National Police Spokesman Inspector General Setyo Wasisto said.

Indonesian police shot dead four men on Wednesday after they used samurai swords to attack officers at police headquarters.

Local journalist Doddy Vladimir, who was at scene of the attack, said he saw a white Toyota Avanza van hit the headquarter's fence at around 9am (02:00 GMT).

Last year, a suicide bombing at a bus station in Jakarta killed three police officers.

A foreign ministry statement carried by the official Wafa news agency said the decision "follows the moving of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Al-Quds (Jerusalem)".

Earlier, an internal police report said that one of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body.

"The one who escaped has been captured and secured at Pekanbaru police station", Mr Wasisto said.

Its worst-ever attack was the 2002 Bali bombings that killed more than 200 people, including locals and foreign tourists.

No group has taken responsibility so far.

The next day, members of another family blew themselves up at a police station in the city, wounding 10.

Police suspect they were carried out by a cell of the Islamic State-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an umbrella organisation on a US State Department terrorist list that has allegedly drawn hundreds of Indonesian sympathisers of Islamic State.

The church bombing family were in the same religious study group as the two other families linked to the attacks, police said.
