Sinclair's Local Anchors Decry Fake News Via Same Script

Sinclair is making TV anchors read a script about fake news—here's what a supercut of it looks like

Matt Pearce with the Los Angeles Times has been in contact with several journalists from Sinclair-run stations, and shockingly it seems like not the greatest place to work - required propaganda aside.

This group, forcing their own agenda through local news stations, is far more risky than the threat of fake news, which these stations have been spreading so rapidly.

Anchors at Sinclair-owned stations shared the script with CNN last month.

Stelter also obtained a memo from Sinclair news executive Scott Livingston directing television anchors to read the message.

The script warns about fake news and claims: "Unfortunately, some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda to control "exactly what people think" ... This is extremely unsafe to democracy".

INSKEEP: The Deadspin video played anchor after anchor after anchor saying this is extremely risky to our democracy, eventually raising the question of what actually was so unsafe to our democracy here.

Sinclair has been accused of using its media influence to convince the Trump administration to ease regulations on the group ownership of television stations. The message calls out supposed bias and false messages in news stories spread on social media and in various unnamed news outlets. And that is all very much echoing of the tweets and the public statements of President Trump.

During KATU news broadcasts Saturday evening and throughout the day Sunday, two spots - one featuring anchors Steve Dunn and Debora Knapp, the other with anchors Brian Wood and Angelica Thornton - aired. Last week, Deadspin created an unsettling viral video consisting of clips of news anchors all saying the same horrifying thing: a warning about the fakeness of mainstream media. As a result, Sinclair has been in constant dialogue with the Justice Department about selling certain stations to allow the deal to go through, and Sinclair most recently submitted the fourth version of its plan for approval. And as Politico reports, last December Jared Kushner was openly bragging about striking a deal between Sinclair and the Trump campaign.

FOLKENFLIK: Yeah. Although publicly traded, it's controlled by the four Smith Brothers based in Baltimore County. We wanted to offer our local viewers direct access to both candidates to talk about issues that matter to them.

In Trump's America, politics have become more tribal than ever before.

The president enjoined all those with grievances over the outcome of the elections to seek constitutional means of resolving them. The candidate who lost Sierra Leone's presidential run-off vote has said his party intends to challenge the results in court.

And Pew data shows that while local news viewership is falling, local stations' audience is still comparable to that of network news and significantly higher than that of cable news. WJAR, a major player in the Rhode Island and southeastern MA markets, declined to comment Monday morning.

President Trump waves as he leaves the White House for a trip to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. What's the business angle here, though? That's being reviewed by antitrust lawyers at the Department of Justice.

Something productive has come from the publicity of Sinclair's latest stunt in that consumers now know to be critical of the news they consume.
