Senate Judiciary Committee votes to bar Trump from firing Mueller

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved a bipartisan bill to protect the special counsel from firing.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has said there's no chance he will bring the bill to the Senate floor for a vote.

While lawmakers, mostly Democrats, have for months pondered taking action to protect Mueller, the effort gained new traction after federal investigators raided the home and office of Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen in an investigation that spun off from the Mueller probe - prompting fresh attacks on the special counsel from Trump. Thom Tillis and Lindsey Graham, two of the bill's cosponsors, as well as Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said it would be "politically suicidal".

Call for more protests in Armenia after talks break down
Supporters of Pashinian, who leads the opposition Civil Contract party, were continuing their street protests on April 26. But police later abandoned efforts to clear streets in the centre, saying it could not take sides in a political crisis .

Two Republican senators, John Cornyn of Texas and Orrin Hatch of Utah, offered an amendment that would provide nonbinding support for Mueller while also making clear that the Constitution prevents Congress from reining in the president's prosecutorial powers. It will place a common-sense check on executive authority.

"While this outcome would, at first blush, seem to support the Mueller bill", the Atlantic reports, "a number of liberal legal scholars have endorsed the late Justice Antonin Scalia's dissent in Morrison, in which he argued the law usurps presidential power". "It will place a common-sense check on executive authority", he added, urging McConnell to promptly schedule a vote.

The amendment was defeated on a 15-6 vote.

The revised amendment would require that notification after the investigation was done, along with a report detailing the investigation's findings and explanations of any charges. Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Graham and Tillis voted with the Democrats to advance the measure to the full Senate. The committee's vote came the same morning that Trump, in an interview on Fox and Friends, warned that he would soon get "involved" in the work of his Justice Department-a cryptic statement that could signal Trump will try to interfere with the special counsel.

A Quinnipiac University poll, conducted from April 20-24, found 74 percent of respondents believe Trump should not order the removal of the special counsel. Further, it would only allow the special counsel to be terminated for "misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, conflict of interest, or other good cause". If dismissed, a special counsel could file for judicial review within 10 days of his or her firing.
