Migrant caravan to reach US-Mexico border Sunday

Central American 'Caravan' Migrants to Seek Asylum at US-Mexico Border

Central American 'Caravan' Migrants to Seek Asylum at US-Mexico Border

Generally, when asylum seekers come to the US border, they begin a process that can take months, or even years, to resolve.

"We hope the United States will take them in", Mujica said. "Those individuals may need to wait in Mexico as CBP officers work to process those already within our facilities".

"What worries me most are my grandchildren".

Shortly before the migrants were expected to arrive, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said San Diego's San Ysidro crossing would not immediately be able to handle more asylum seekers.

Some of the group sang the Honduran national anthem, and about 30 of them climbed the border fence and shouted slogans about the migrant struggle. In early April, after scathing tweets from the USA president, organizers said the group had become so big that it was unwieldy and would end its journey in Mexico City rather than continuing to the border.

In past years, such caravans have served to call attention to the plight of migrants on a risky journey, but they often travelled in obscurity.

Border patrol agents could be seen observing the migrants from the U.S. side on Sunday.

Elin Orrellana, a 23-year-old pregnant woman from El Salvador, said she is fleeing the violent MS-13 street gang, a favorite target of both Sessions and Trump due to their brutal killings in communities in the United States.

"One can always make up for lost time with a child, but if they kill him, you can't", he said outside his dome-shaped tent in a migrant shelter near the imposing USA border barriers separating San Diego from Tijuana.

U.S. President Donald on Saturday threatened to shut down the federal government in September if Congress did not provide more funding to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

Though the caravan is relatively small compared with prior waves of immigration, like the tens of thousands of Haitians who petitioned for asylum at the San Ysidro Port of Entry two years ago, the media attention on the caravan has been amplified by the Trump presidency.

"To anyone that is associated with this caravan, Think Before You Act", Rodney Scott, chief patrol agent in San Diego for the US Border Patrol, said in a statement. "If anyone has encouraged you to illegally enter the United States, or make any false statements to US government officials, they are giving you bad advice and they are placing you and your family at risk". The group travelled by bus, train and on foot during their 2,000-mile (3,200km) trek to the USA border.

"It's a humanitarian issue", Dunn said.

Asylum-seekers are typically held up to three days at the border and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The travellers face an uncertain future if they ask for asylum with USA immigration lawyers warning them that they face possible separation from their children and detention for many months. Asylum seekers are screened and have their backgrounds checked and, depending on how they entered the country, may be detained pending a hearing.

"We want to tell the president of the United States that we are not criminals, we are not terrorists, that he gives us the opportunity to live without fear".

USA immigration lawyers are telling Central Americans in a caravan of asylum-seekers that traveled through Mexico to the border with San Diego that they face possible separation from their children and detention for many months. About 50 supporters watched on the US side, where they were held about 20 yards away. "If you enter the United States at any place other than a Port of Entry it is a crime".

The increasing flow of desperate immigrants from Central America is the result of more than a century of imperialist oppression at the hands of the United States, which has devastated these societies.

About 1,000 people mainly from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador made their way to the border in Tijuana with San Diego on Sunday. The gang threats started because of a dispute between the gang and her former partner.

The family fled to Guatemala, and lived for several years in southern Mexico but continued to receive gang threats. Armed men entered the house early in the morning, escorted all of the extended family outside, and threw them to the ground at gunpoint, she said. His mother, Iraeta Martínez, followed behind, crying.

The travelers face an uncertain future if they ask for asylum.
